A cute embarrassment

Shubhi Asthana

Those were the golden days when I was all of 16 years of age with mind boggling ideas in my brain. I could find ways to reach the moon and do holidaying in Mars, eat my favorite food in Bill’s café and dream to become a world class doctor at the same time.
So my father seeing my inclination enrolled me in a medical coaching class in the nearby metro city where my aunt – my father’s sister resided.

My coaching was going on full swing and I had already entered the select group of promising students. My daily routine was going to college, then going to coaching classes and finally returning home.

However, I noticed something odd. On my route, I found a pair of eyes following me, trying to make some efforts in striking a conversation with me.

On that particular afternoon, I was riding my bike when somebody called in from behind me. A biker was trying to get close to me, touched my scarf and lo-behold! the scarf just slipped from my neck and landed on the road. There was a large shout from behind. A passerby started shouting at the biker at the top of his voice. Bewildered, the biker removed his helmet and tried to reason out. When it didn’t work, he just simply took off at the fastest speed possible. There was total commotion on the road as multiple things happened very fast. I parked my bike at the side of the road and went to retrieve my scarf. The passerby continued to rant loudly, cursing the new generation biker boys for behaving unruly on the road.

I cycled as fast as I could, and reached my aunt’s place, straight to my bedroom and changed my clothes.

My aunt asked me what happened and fumed in anger when I told her the entire incident. She called up my mom immediately. There was heated conversation and soon my parents decided to come by.

My parents reached my aunt’s place as soon as they could. My aunt’s mood has turned sour, and my parents were sitting on the couch with bent heads, shaking in disbelief. I felt like a criminal and didn’t know what to do. This went on for hours. In between, my mom came to check me to ensure that I was safe and was not injured or scratched anywhere.

Next day at the breakfast table, my father announced that he would like to see me continue my studies and not be perturbed by this incident. My exams were coming up in less than two months, and I should find alternate ways to travel to my classes. He wanted me to excel in my studies, as it was the reason, I had left my home and came to this metro city. He requested my aunt to make sure that she is vigilant and ensured that she knew about my whereabouts.

With this, my parents returned home, and all was well. But the best part of this incident is that the biker boy turned out to be someone in my class, who was trying to capture my attention. He was scared of my presence in school and could not muster the courage to speak to me in front of his friends. So, he wanted to strike a conversation on way to college. This I came to know the next day when I returned for classes.

This cute embarrassing incident led to a sweet romance, followed by marriage, and lots and lots of laughter!
