A Hundred Years of The Great Gatsby
Jia Nan Jeng
Re: the fateful summer of 1922,
On an egg-shaped peninsula
That juts into Long Island Sound,
Nick Carraway arrives in New York
To learn the bond business,
An upstart migrant from the West.
Jay Gatsby, the man who lends
His name to this novel, embodies
The American Dream;
On him rests the fruit of the Gilded Age
On him rests the fruit of the Gilded Age
As he reaches for the green light
On the end of Daisy's dock.
2025: The Great Gatsby is the well
Of a hope that springs eternal
Or the requiem for a dream deferred.
Either way, this legacy of
Or the requiem for a dream deferred.
Either way, this legacy of
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald
has endured a hundred years.
