bread and hope

the smell of freshly baked bread filled the room. it wafted into the corners of the house, filling every nook and cranny and drifting out into the evening gloom.

the house was small, with just a few rooms and a large family inside. the outside was dark, but the inside - oh, the inside was warm and bright.

the family laughed and talked amongst themselves, sharing stories over buttered slices of bread. their bellies were already mostly full, but their souls were being fed.

maybe the following day would bring change. maybe things wouldn't work out the way they'd planned. but for that moment, the little house was full of baked bread and warmth and hope, and one day when the children were all grown up perhaps the smell of freshly baked bread would evoke positive memories of warmth and hope
