My Nation

Mary Chen

Our nations are as different
As north and south
And west and east
Our countries are as similar
As two brothers,
or two sisters

Our flags are the same color
Red and blue and white
With stars scattered across
Just some aspects different
Like our accent
Or terrain

When other people
think about my nation
They think of endless deserts, and heat:
They think of scorpions and spiders
snakes and kangaroos
Koalas and sugar gliders

But when I
think of my country
I think of an endless coast, and forests
I think of the Great Barrier Reef
And the Daintree rainforest,
The Sydney Opera House

The different foods and landscapes
The cultures and the people
Are all sparkling in my memories
My classmates, friends and teachers
And everyone in between
In Australia
