Near Orbit Collision

San José Public Library | Spring into Poetry Contest, 2021. Entry in the age 18+ category.

In the heavens
A twist of probability
Gravity wells at contention

And we flew into each other's orbit
For the briefest of moments
Heavenly bodies in dance

A nurturing resonance
Chemistry in physiology
Chance and fate the same coin

Inspiration to muse
That divine spark so rare
Unique and treasured

Everything and all things
In singularity and prose
No passing fancy

When beauty and vitality
Converge in atomic synergy
A whole greater than their sum

I fell into her, unto heaven
A celestial oubliette
And the sea of stars tore

On the dark side now
Where radiance shines no more
A satellite leaving orbit

Time and space
A playground of hearts
A supernova in my chest

At last I know why
At least I knew why
And lost I know why
