Ocean
Selen Castro
The cold, salty water of the ocean stunned her.
Not for long. She shook it off, with the smile only a child could conjure up. She swaddled deeper in, the water up to her waist, licking at her form, the waves a salty green-blue, ocean foam pooling around her and receding with the beat of the wind. The shapes she was watching, with their glittery scales, silky manes of hair, fled deeper, deeper, but their colors still sparkling to the surface like stars on a night gown.
"Cassie!"
She halted her advance. The ocean continued to becon her, the water pulling at her deeper, but she stood there frozen, still marooned in the shallows, as she turned back and gazed at her mom. Her mom, at the edge of the water, with her bag in her hands, gesturing for her to leave the cold dance of the ocean and head back to burning sandy shores.
"Why?"
Why would she go? Another glance at the water, and it revealed the creatures, getting away, deeper into their reign, their stars no longer so clearly flickering on the dancing surfaces. She wanted to talk to them. Talk to them with their pretty voices that sang to her and with their gemstone eyes that reminded her of her granny, and touch their hair of silk, colors like paint, and their dresses turned tails, bejeweled with scales.
"It's time to go home."
But then again. She wouldn't ever dream of going against her mommy, her sweet and caring mommy who would buy her ice cream when she was sad, or brush her hair when it got tangled, or tuck her into her warm blankies in her warm castle-bed. Would it really be worth it, to see the ladies of the sea, if her mommy wouldn't see?
No, no it wouldn't.
So she turned, and ignoring the ocean's beckons, trugged back to shore.
