The Attack on Christmas

It was Christmas Eve in the freezing cold city of Chicago. Twelve year old Charlotte, and her family were watching the Christmas Parade that takes place every year. The snow and wind blew hard that night and it felt like needles on her pale face. Charlotte pulled her jacket tighter
hoping it would keep her from turning into ice. Christmas music was blasting loud from the band and she could see the decorative parade floats strolling by even from the park her family was in. Charlotte went to the hot cocoa stand to get something warm to drink. As she was returning, everyone seemed oddly lured into the parade and they never moved or looked elsewhere.

"Hey mom, do you want some too?" Charlotte asked, pointing to the hot cocoa. Her mom kept staring straight ahead, not even blinking. Everything seemed strangely quiet all of a sudden and it seemed like everything was...

Frozen! Everything and everyone was frozen. Charlotte frantically looked around, her heart beating faster and faster. Her mom, dad, the people in the crowd, the parade, everything was as still as stone. As Charlotte was looking around, confused, a bright light caught her eye. Something on the parks' fountain was really shiny. Curiously, she walked over to the fountain, making sure there wasn't anything dangerous nearby. As Charlotte neared the marble fountain, she saw two silhouettes of people the same height as hers. She halted to a stop and took a step back. The bright white light dimmed, as if it were only trying to get her attention and make her come here. Since the light went down, she could make out the people's faces more. They were both kids her age, one boy and one girl. The girl had brown skin and long black hair unlike Charlotte's short blond hair. The boy had short light brown hair and wore glasses. They both wore identical, confused and worried expressions on their faces.

"Hi," Charlotte squeaked. She was happy to see that she was not the only one who was not frozen, but also unclear on what happened.

"Hello! I'm Violet-"

"And I'm Jack," added the boy, pushing up his glasses.

"Hi guys! My name is Charlotte. Do you know what happened?" she asked quickly, hoping they would know.

"I'm not sure, but there's this box we found where the light was shining," answered Violet.

That's when Charlotte noticed that there was a small box, no bigger than a ring case, on the edge of the fountain. It had the same glow around it as the light that caught her eye. She took the box and opened it.

"Ahhhh!" all three of them screamed at the same time. As Charlotte opened the box, a hologram appeared. It was of a Fairy. She was tall and had long, white wings which were brushing against the ground.

"Hello, children," the Fairy said in a soft, melodic voice. "I am going to be helping you on your mission."

A million questions raced through Charlotte's mind. What mission? From when did fairies start existing in this world? Does she know how to unfreeze her parents? She looked over to Violet and Jack, and their faces also told that they had the same questions running through their brains.

"What?" she asked, looking at their confused faces. "Did you not receive my warnings and messages about the Ice Monster?"

They all shook their heads no, staring at her as if she were speaking gibberish.

"Okay, I'll give you a quick explanation. You see, this monster, known as the Ice Monster, escaped from our world and came to yours. He basically wants to take over Earth and kill everyone. If you guys don't make the monster return back to our world or kill it in 24 hours,
everyone will die. And I can give you guys clues on where he is, so you can track him down," she finally concluded.

The Fairy said this as if it was no big deal. She was so calm and confident. Charlotte on the other hand, did not even have a pinch of confidence left in her. All she could think of was that millions of people are going to lose their lives because of her. But, she had to ignore all of these negative thoughts which were taking over her mind, and at least try. At the thought of this, all the confidence and braveness rushed back to her body.

"So what are the clues you are going to giv-."

Before Jack could finish his sentence, the Fairy's eyes glowed bright blue and her silky white hair flew around even though there was no wind blowing.

"I see a lot of water, tall sticks, no wait, buildings. And there are a lot of fancy ships and a huge dock decorated with beautiful christmas lights," she said in a deep voice unlike hers. Then all of a sudden, all the magic went away and the Fairy returned back to her normal self, smiling. "That was your clue."

"Soooo, that means the Ice Monster is in Navy Pier?" Violet asked, slowly nodding to herself.

"Great, how do you expect us to get there?" Jack asked sarcastically.

As soon as he said this, all three of them turned towards the parking lot, thinking the same thing.

"Lets use my dad's car. It's really old, so even if we crash it, it won't be a big deal. I'm driving, by the way!" yelled Jack as he ran towards his parents to get the keys.

Within minutes they were in the cream colored, dented, rusted, old car. It took Jack a few minutes to figure out which one was the accelerator and brake and how to start the car. Charlotte prayed that Jack had at least a tiny knowledge on how to drive and that they wouldn't die from a car accident before even getting to the Ice Monster. With a huge jerk, they zoomed off to Navy Pier.

As they were driving, it was snowing hard. White flakes kept pouring onto the car's mirrors and made it hard for Jack to drive. The only thing that made it possible for them to drive was that there were not many cars in the wee hours of the morning and even if there was, they were all frozen in place.

"Oh! I just remembered something," the Fairy hologram exclaimed. "I forgot to give you guys your weapons!"

Before the children could ask any questions to the Fairy, she started mummering some chants and all of a sudden each one of them had a weapon laid on their laps. Charlotte had a beautiful golden colored bow and a quiver full of arrows. Luckily, she had gone to archery classes, so she knew how to use it. Violet had a shimmering silver sword. She was swinging it around impressively, sitting on the back seat of the car. Charlotte assumed that she probably knew how to use it, or had experience with something similar. Jack on the other hand, was trying to look at his shield and spear and also drive at the same time, which made the car go zig-zag.

Within an hour, they reached downtown Chicago. There were huge, tall skyscrapers and the streets were decorated with beautiful Christmas lights. The slight snow falling down on the roads would make this scene amazing in any other situation. Jack parked the car on the side of a small street and the three of them decided to walk over to Navy Pier and discuss their plan on attacking.

As they arrived closer to the lake, Charlotte could make out a ten-foot tall white monster with huge fangs. He had sharp horns made of ice on the top of the head. When the trio came closer, he turned furiously, growling at them.

Charlotte, Violet, and Jack turned towards each other to conform their plan: Attack the monster until it dies! The three of them turned simultaneously to face the monster's angry eyes and shouted, "ATTACK!"
