Voiceless Lament

Why doesn't the world care, mama?
I dreamed of silence
but silence is no longer safe
..no longer safe...
Silence
summoned
untimely death
of young soldiers
of proud fathers
of courageous brothers
untimely death
of innocent sisters
of first dreams
of last hopes
...last hopes...
Why do we have to be quiet, mama?
Silence turned into
voiceless lament.
the stubborn screams
lost in the hazy dawn,
hang on to the naked branches
of the silver birch trees
aligned
like soldiers falling in formation
at 0600 hour
...0600 hour...
When will it be over, mama?
The shrilled voice cut the darkness
faster
than the deafening sirens of death
cutting through the morning dew,
faster
than the hissing of the guns
taunting the cries that stopped long ago
...long ago...
The cold lead molded
into vociferous thoughts
demands
the respite of the night

dark circles
new wrinkles
clenched teeth
shattered dreams

...shattered dreams...

relentless questions
hit harder
than the bullets hit
the scarlet streets
in vain guarded by the naked branches
of the silver birch trees
at 0600 hour
...0600 hour...
Why doesn't the world care, mama?
