We Battle the Mysteries

Jonathan Lee

We battle the mysteries of the natural world,
Desiring to understand what the universe has to offer.
We listen in patience to the calling of the stars,
Learning the direction to which they are pointing us.
We decipher the message of the grazing cow and the river fish.
We see what is invisible to the naked eye,
And what is hidden by false realities.

We battle the mysteries of society,
Wishing to understand its context.
We consume news and politics,
to craft views and opinions.
We inform ourselves about what is occurring,
On the other side of the world,
To know of our neighbors.

We battle the mysteries of religion and philosophy,
desperate for an answer to what lies beyond mortal life.
We search, search, and search; We did, dig, and dig.
Without break or repast, we search and dig forever.

We battle the mysteries of history,
Too eager to fill in the gaps with sweet stories; and cure the moments of amnesia.
We strive to move on; but cannot without first a great deal of justice.

We battle the mysteries.
